THE TOTAL BRAIN HEALTH 2017 BRAIN HEALTHY GIFT GUIDE
Spike Their Moves! There is little question that one of the best things we can do for our brains is to move and keep moving. Spikeball, a group game using a trampoline and ball, is a great workout. We love it for its brain-building testing of reaction time (something we all need to keep up as we grow older) and social element. Get one for the family and one for the office!
Better Noodles for Their Noodle. Healthier eating is always a great gift choice. This spiralizer transforms vegetables and fruits into healthy and flavorful noodle shapes. With so many vegetables and fruits to choose from, the possibilities for delicious dishes are seemingly endless.
Sit Smarter. Sedentary lifestyles have been linked to poor health outcomes. Active seating, like the chairs from Furniture for Life, are a great way to make sure that when they have to sit, they are sitting smarter. And it’s a smart deal for you as well! Furniture for Life is offering 25% off MSRP for all TBH customers ordering through December 31st, 2017. Contact FFL directly (firstname.lastname@example.org) and mention discount code BRAIN25 to receive your discount!
Sharpen Your Skills – Changes in our reaction time, concentration, speedy thinking and coordination can be common with age. Research shows, however, that working out these important cognitive skills can help keep them buff. In Word Slam, two teams each have a storyteller. The two storytellers play against each other by giving clues to their teams as they are race against the timer and each other. But it’s not that easy. Speaking and acting is absolutely forbidden for the storytellers! They must tell their stories using only 105 cards, each with one word on it- a noun, verb, adjective, or preposition.
Puzzle Their Minds. Stretch their thinking with a longstanding and often beloved intellectual challenge, jigsaw puzzles. You can find many online of varying challenge levels, and they make a great family or group brain-building activity. This winter-themed 500-piece puzzle may be just the ticket to get them started over the holidays!
Help Them Find Their Keys! Give them the gift of staying organized and never losing their keys – or phones, wallet, sunglasses, or charger! – again. This attractive, multi-functional, docking station offers a groove along the bottom for charging cords, as well as a slot for watches or bracelets, and a keychain notch at the top.
Give the Gift of Gratitude. Studies show that regularly practicing gratitude in our lives can boost emotional well-being and connectedness. Encourage them to give thanks for life’s blessings with this beautiful Gratitude Jar. This apothecary-style jar looks sharp as it gets filled with loving notes and a regular reminder to be grateful each day.
Support Their Spirit. Deep Listening is the latest offering from master yoga teacher and TBH friend Jillian Pransky. Her new book explores the ways we can better care for our bodies and our minds by listening more closely and deeply to ourselves through mindfulness practice. Try this simple meditation exercise with Jillian as a preview of the wonderful advice she shares in her book. Available in hardcover, e-book or audiobook versions.
Help Them be the Host with the Most! Evidence continues to show the tremendous boost socializing gives our brains. What better way to stay connected and healthy than throwing a dinner party? Casual or classic, big or small, help them get ready to host a get-together everyone will love. Pair this New York Times article, which provides step-by-step directions on how to throw a dinner party to remember, along with a gift basket of special table decor, a cookbook, and a grocery gift card for a highly personal, affordable and fun gift.
A Few More Great Ideas!
Give In Their Honor. The holidays are a wonderful time to give to charity. Why not make a donation in a recipient’s name to those who are in need? Among our top choices are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, which funds early-stage research in Alzheimer’s treatments.
